To be able to wander around Paris is a very great luxury. We wandered towards the Seine this morning and had a general idea about maybe ending up at the The Eiffel tower and then doing a vague circuit back into the Place de Concorde. We managed to achieve that end and we also managed to do it without any perceivable harm to our well-being.

We traced out way up the Seine to le Pont Neuf (bridge nine, the source of much romantic conjecture), and then followed the skyline to the Eiffel tower. It had a queue of approximately one thousand people for the two working elevators so I decided that I wouldn't spend my waking moments in Paris trying to see what one could better see from an aeroplane or GoogleEarth.

We saw lots of machine-gun toting soldiers wandering around looking very prepared for an ugly eventuality. They were all well-equipped and very chic.

I was surprised to see that a lot of the Champs- Elyssee and most of the Place de la Concorde was covered with a light-coloured stony road-base. (hundreds of acres of it). It was dusty and dirty. My favourite black leather shoes had to cope with prairie conditions. I could not have guessed that this has been like this the whole time I've existed. Perhaps some African countries could chip in to help pave this wasteland. It would have a positive trickle-down effect to both them and the people of Paris, the centre of all culture, could rise out of the muck at last.

We manged to do a good circuit of the place and make plans for the next two days. We will go to the Louvre on Monday because of the crowds on the weekends, and another museum tomorrow early. Queuing is not a holiday so we would rather sit at a brasserie drinking and watching the crowds. It's a treat.

Again this blog is hurried but I've thrown up a few representative pics to help out.

If you guys want something more......

  3. Luck is just a word to describe the cumulative benefit which comes from years of crap-dodging. Don't step in it, call it luck.
